Australian Future Cotton Leaders 2024

What’s Happening?

Applications are now open for the 2026 intake of the Australian Future Cotton Leaders Program (AFCLP), the cotton industry’s premier leadership development initiative. The program, run and coordinated by Cotton Australia with support from the Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC), is held every two years and aims to develop leadership knowledge, skills and experience across the cotton supply chain.

Applications are open to growers, consultants, merchants, and research and extension personnel who wish to develop their leadership skills and complete a project related to their area of interest. The course is designed for the best and brightest young people from across the industry. Applications close on November 28, and the program will conclude with a graduation ceremony at the 2026 Australian Cotton Industry Leadership Dinner on the Gold Coast in August.

Why It Matters

The program supports leadership, knowledge, innovation, and research within the cotton industry. Cotton Australia CEO Adam Kay said leadership development is one of the industry’s key priorities. “Leadership is one of the key priorities of the cotton industry’s strategic plans and nurturing next generation leadership development is an important part of that,” Mr Kay said.

“The AFCLP has been a valuable part of the industry for many years in that we have been able to identify individuals with incredible potential and those people have graduated the program to become CEOs, Board Directors and key decision-makers across the cotton industry.”

By the Numbers

132 graduates have completed the program since it was first introduced in 2006, many of whom now hold key positions in the cotton industry.

16 participants were selected from 45 applicants in the 2024 course, which included face-to-face forums, online discussions, one-on-one sessions, and integration with industry activities.

• The 2026 intake will include 15 participants, all committed to building their leadership capability through the program.

Zoom In

The 2026 AFCLP will feature face-to-face forums, interactive online discussions, one-on-one coaching and integration with industry activities. Each participant will also undertake an individual project connected to their area of interest to apply leadership skills in a practical setting.

CRDC Executive Director Allan Williams said the program provides participants with valuable skills and industry connections.v“The Australian Future Cotton Leaders Program is a cornerstone of the cotton industry’s leadership development,” Mr Williams said.
“It equips emerging leaders with the practical tools and confidence to tackle challenges, drive innovation and create real change. Just as importantly, it builds a powerful network — connecting participants with current industry leaders and forging strong bonds within each cohort.”

Zoom Out

Graduates from previous programs include Nigel Burnett, former Chair of the Cotton Australia Board, Aaron Kiely, current President of the Queensland Farmers Federation, and Grace Griffiths, the 2025 CRDC Chris Lehmann Young Cotton Achiever of the Year.

The program continues to highlight the importance of leadership development and collaboration in ensuring the Australian cotton industry remains a global leader.

Local Impact

The AFCLP encourages professionals from every level of the cotton supply chain to contribute to a stronger, more connected industry. It helps develop leaders who can represent their communities, support industry growth, and promote innovation across Australia’s cotton regions.

What to Look for Next?

Applications close November 28, with successful participants to be announced before the start of the 2026 program. The year-long journey will conclude at the Australian Cotton Industry Leadership Dinner on the Gold Coast in August 2026.
