What’s happening
Up to three F/A-18F Super Hornet aircraft will conduct diversion and familiarisation training in and around at Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport this week.
The aircraft, operated by No. 1 Squadron based at the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Amberley, will fly in and around the Toowoomba region on Wednesday and Thursday, 18-19 February
from approximately 7pm.
Why it matters
Diversion training ensures aircrew can safely operate from alternate airfields when required. This type of exercise strengthens operational flexibility and national defence capability.
However, evening flying may generate higher levels of aircraft noise for nearby communities.
Defence said all flying activities are conducted under strict safety and operational guidelines, with noise reduction and environmental considerations factored into planning.
Local impact
Communities around Toowoomba can expect increased aircraft movements over the two evenings.
Operations are scheduled from around 7pm, meaning residents may notice jet activity during the night hours.
Zoom in
Night flying is included in the schedule. Air Force has flagged that flight patterns may vary from usual operations during this window.
The twin seat F/A-18F Super Hornet can undertake:
- air interception
- air combat
- close air support of ground troops
- interception of enemy supply lines including shipping
What to look for next
Flying is subject to change due to variables such as air traffic control requirements, weather, and other aviation considerations.
Noise reduction and the environment are vital considerations in the planning and conduct of military flying.
