What’s happening?

Toowoomba Regional Council is inviting residents to attend information sessions about the Central Highfields Activation Project.

The sessions follow the official sod turning for the project and will allow residents to hear more about the planned works.

Council officers will present information about the upgrades and answer questions from the community.

TRC Construction and Maintenance portfolio spokesperson Councillor Carol Taylor said community engagement was important as the project progresses.

“As Highfields continues to grow, it’s critical we invest in the roads, services and public spaces that support our residents, local businesses and future development.

“We invite the community to find out more about this vital upgrade,” Cr Taylor said.

Residents will have several opportunities in March to attend sessions and speak directly with Council staff.

Why it matters?

Council says the upgrades will support the continued growth of Highfields.

Improved roads, services and public spaces are expected to support residents, businesses and future development.

The project also aims to address infrastructure barriers that have limited development in Central Highfields.

By the numbers

  • The Queensland State Government has contributed $20.1 million through the Residential Activation Fund Round 1 to support the Central Highfields Activation Project.

  • The upgrade will deliver three new roundabouts along Highfields Road at the Kratzke Road and O’Brien Road intersection, Lauder Drive and Rogers Drive.

  • Community members will have three opportunities to attend sessions in March 2026 and learn more about the project.

Zoom in

Several major upgrades are planned as part of the project.

Three new roundabouts will be constructed on Highfields Road to improve traffic movement and safety.

The Kratzke and O’Brien roads intersection will also be realigned, with Kratzke Road connecting directly to a newly constructed New O’Brien Road.

Stormwater improvements will be completed as part of the works.

Water, sewer, power and telecommunications services will be relocated underground.

Landscaping will also be introduced, including trees and planted areas designed to create a more shaded and pedestrian-friendly streetscape.

Zoom out

The Central Highfields Activation Project forms part of broader planning to support population growth in the region.

Council says the upgrades will deliver the trunk infrastructure needed to unlock new dwellings across greenfield and infill sites.

This infrastructure is expected to support future housing and development across Central Highfields.

Local impact

Residents and businesses in Highfields will see improvements to roads, services and streetscapes as the project progresses.

Council says the upgrades will support local businesses and make the area more accessible for the growing community.

Improved infrastructure is also expected to support future housing opportunities in the area.
