What’s happening?

People First Bank is helping Toowoomba PCYC recover after the fire that destroyed its James Street facility. The support is aimed at helping the organisation rebuild and restart essential community programs.

The fire has stopped the PCYC from running its usual youth development and crime prevention programs. Those services have been part of the community since 1969, in partnership with the Queensland Police Service.

People First Bank has stepped in with practical support so services can resume sooner. Chief Customer Officer Maria-Ann Camilleri said the bank wanted to help the PCYC return to serving young people as quickly as possible.

“PCYC is a place where young people feel supported, safe and included, and losing that space has been incredibly tough,” Ms Camilleri said.

“We wanted to help in a practical way and support the PCYC team as they work to restart their much-needed programs.”

Why it matters?

Toowoomba PCYC plays an important role for local young people, especially those who need safe and inclusive support. The loss of the James Street site has left a gap in services that help with youth development and crime prevention.

This funding matters because it helps the PCYC move from recovery into action. It gives staff and members the tools needed to begin restoring key programs.

Local Impact

This support will help Toowoomba PCYC restart programs that serve young people who are at risk. It also helps staff reconnect with members and continue program delivery while recovery efforts continue.

The community response shows how strongly the PCYC is valued in Toowoomba. People First Bank’s contribution adds practical help at a time when local services are needed.

By the numbers

  • People First Bank is providing $13,398 for sporting equipment to help restart the PCYC’s After Dark and Drop-In programs for young people at risk.
  • The bank is also contributing $2,458 for two mobile phones and two tablets to support staff, member services and program delivery.
  • Toowoomba PCYC has been part of the community since 1969, delivering inclusive programs focused on youth development and crime prevention.

Zoom In

The immediate focus is on getting core programs running again. Sporting equipment will support the return of After Dark and Drop-In, while new devices will help staff manage services and program delivery.

People First Bank is also exploring the donation of additional laptops it no longer requires. That could provide another layer of support as the recovery continues.

Zoom Out

The story is also about how local organisations respond after a major setback. When a long-standing community service loses its base, recovery depends on practical support, not just goodwill.

In this case, the response has come from both the wider community and a local banking partner. That support is helping Toowoomba PCYC take early steps towards restoring its role.

What To Look For Next?

Rebuilding access to safe and inclusive programs for young people will remain central to the PCYC’s recovery.
