What’s Happening?
Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) has awarded two new waste facility operational services contracts to Ability Enterprises. This not-for-profit social enterprise now manages the gatehouse, maintenance services, and tip shop operations at the Greater Toowoomba and Kleinton Waste Management Facilities.
Why It Matters
This partnership supports residents facing employment barriers by providing real job opportunities. It fosters inclusion, boosts economic participation, and reinforces TRC’s commitment to social procurement.
Cr Melissa Taylor, Portfolio Spokesperson for Waste Services, said,
“It’s incredibly rewarding to see how this partnership with Ability Enterprises is creating real opportunities for people in our community. Meaningful employment provides a real sense of purpose and connection. Everyone deserves the chance to contribute and thrive, and this initiative is making a genuine difference in people’s lives.”
Local Impact
Since 2012, Ability Enterprises has helped hundreds of locals access employment through TRC-operated facilities. Many have gone on to secure permanent jobs with the Council. The initiative improves productivity, customer experience, and community wellbeing.
Cr Taylor added,
“A diverse and inclusive workplace fosters innovation, enhances decision-making, and creates a more engaged workforce. At the tip shops, having a team from different backgrounds means a better understanding of customers’ needs and a more welcoming experience for everyone who visits.”
Claire Torkington, CEO of Ability Enterprises, also shared her appreciation:
“The Council’s commitment to social procurement is a great example of local government procuring services in a way that delivers benefits for residents in many ways.”
She emphasised the value of the new contracts in giving people skills and confidence:
“The two waste facility operational services contracts mean members of the Toowoomba Region community can gain a range of skills and most importantly gain confidence through their employment.”
