What’s happening?
Toowoomba’s own Supercars Champion, Will Brown, is trading in horsepower for running shoes as he returns home to compete in the 2025 Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport Marathon. On Saturday 3 May, Brown will take part in two events — the inaugural Runway Mile and the Grand Central 5km — held on the unique course around Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport.
Why it matters?
Having a national sports figure like Will Brown not only boosts the profile of the event but also celebrates local pride. Brown, who clinched the 2024 Supercars Championship with Triple Eight Race Engineering, is set to inspire participants and spectators alike. His involvement highlights the marathon as more than just a race — it’s a community celebration.
“It’s not every day you get to run a mile on a runway and the opportunity to test myself on a fast and flat 5km course around the airport will be a great challenge,” said Brown. “I’m looking forward to catching up with some locals and visitors to our beautiful region and encourage everyone to come along, enjoy the atmosphere and action of a major event, cheer on the runners and have some fun at the airport for the afternoon.”
Local Impact
The event is expected to draw participants from across the region and beyond, creating opportunities for tourism, hospitality, and local businesses. The festivities will feature live entertainment from Toowoomba’s Fibonacci Band, food trucks, and family-friendly fun on the lawn — making it a full community event beyond the race.

Events Management Queensland (EMQ) has introduced new elements to the marathon program to make the event more inclusive and distinctive. “We’ve added the very unique opportunity to run where few have run before with the Runway Mile, the Runway Relay and the Grand Central 5km to open the event up to everyone and cater for all ages and abilities,” said EMQ CEO Ben Mannion.

The Toowoomba event is part of a broader portfolio managed by Events Management Queensland, which also delivers iconic events such as the ASICS Gold Coast Marathon and the Pan Pacific Masters Games — the latter having been named the 2024 Gold Coast Sporting Event of the Year. These events significantly contribute to Queensland’s status as a premier sports and events destination.
