Toowoomba’s Station Street CBD car park is set to become home to a multi-storey housing development.
A significant number of car parks in the southeast area of the car park will be permanently removed from Saturday, March 1 as construction starts on a 75-unit apartment complex.
Brisbane Housing Company bought the land from Toowoomba Regional Council in 2022 to build a mixture of social and affordable housing.
Cr Trevor Manteufel said the upcoming changes were necessary.
“We don’t expect the downsizing of the car park to have a significant effect on the community,” said Cr Manteufel.
“However, we do know residents have been asking for more housing options for quite some time.
“Council is pleased to be contributing towards providing affordable housing options for our community. We are delighted to have the chance to alleviate some of the pressure residents are feeling because of the cost-of-living crisis.”
“This is a step in the right direction for the future of our Region.”
The location for the BHC multi-storey development was chosen due to its proximity to amenities and public transport.
