Families whose gravestones were damaged in a callous vandalism rampage will get financial help to fix the graves.

Toowoomba Regional Council is now offering families partial financial relief to fix monuments at the Drayton And Toowoomba that were vandalised last month.

Three teens were arrested over the August 10 incident, which caused about $500,000 in damage.

Some of the gravestones damaged were more than 100 years old.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Geoff McDonald said the council was keen to work with residents and their families who had been devastated by the senseless destruction.

Cr McDonald said the council had completed an evaluation of the cemetery and compiled a list of the damaged sites.

“Family members or people connected to any of the identified sites who wish to reinstate the site are asked to please contact our Cemetery Services Team,” Mr McDonald said.

The Queensland Police Service would also like a list of affected parties.

“Council will remove and rectify hazards to meet workplace health & safety requirements,” Cr McDonald said. This will include placing monuments flat and face up for the safety of the community.”

” Council wishes to support people who have identified damage to fixed monuments that are linked to them.”
