What’s happening?

The Department of Transport and Main Roads will upgrade a four-kilometre stretch of the Cunningham Highway between the Fisher Park Truck Stop at Tregony and South Branch Road in Maryvale. Works are scheduled to begin in late August 2025, with completion expected mid 2026, weather and construction conditions permitting. The Fisher Park Rest Areas will be closed during the project, with drivers advised to use the Gladfield Rest Area about 16 kilometres west.

Why it matters

The safety upgrades are designed to reduce the risk of fatal and serious injury crashes on this busy corridor. “This design and construction project will improve safety and reduce the frequency and severity of crashes on this section of the Cunningham Highway,” Transport and Main Roads Southern Queensland Regional Director Bill Lansbury said.

Local impact

Rest area access at Fisher Park will pause for the duration of works. Road users are asked to plan stops at the Gladfield Rest Area. TMR thanked the community for its patience while the safety improvements are underway.

By the numbers

  • 4 kilometres, Tregony to Maryvale, will be upgraded for safer travel.

  • Late August 2025 start, mid 2026 completion expected, subject to conditions.

  • Fisher Park Rest Areas closed throughout, Gladfield Rest Area 16 kilometres west.

Zoom out

This is a TMR design and construction project focused on safer, more forgiving road edges and clearer separation for oncoming traffic. Community feedback gathered in 2023 helped shape the final design. “We would like to thank members of the community who provided their feedback in 2023 during detailed design which has helped inform the design for the safety improvements on this section of the highway,” Mr Lansbury said.

What to look for next

Construction will commence in late August 2025, with milestones tracked toward mid 2026 completion. TMR will provide updates as works progress, including advice on rest area reopening once construction finishes.
