What’s happening?

The Toowoomba Garden City Mosque will host its 12th Annual Mosque Open Day and International Food Festival this Saturday, 21 June 2025, welcoming locals and visitors for a day of food, fun, friendship and faith. The event runs from 10:30am to 3:00pm, with entry open to all.

Why it matters

This vibrant cultural event is more than just a food festival – it fosters understanding, unity, and inclusion. As Imam Dr Mohammad Aminul Islam explains, “Food brings people together. It starts conversations and builds bridges with community members.”

The open day is a cornerstone in Toowoomba’s cultural calendar and a reflection of Australia’s growing appreciation of its diverse Islamic community. “Continuing a tradition of openness and engagement, Mosque Open Days have become a significant part of Australia’s Islamic culture,” Imam Aminul Islam added.

Local Impact

Supported by Queensland Government grants, this annual event provides a rare and enriching opportunity for non-Muslim locals to engage with the Muslim community in a friendly, educational, and welcoming environment. It also showcases the Garden City Mosque as a hub of cultural and spiritual exchange.

Toowoomba Mayor Cr Geoff McDonald, Minister for Women & Women’s Economic Security, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, and for Multiculturalism Hon. Fiona Simpson MP, and Trevor Watts MP (Member for Toowoomba North) will be in attendance, highlighting the event’s civic significance.

By the Numbers:

  • Nearly 2,000 people attended last year’s Mosque Open Day.

  • 20 international food stalls will offer a variety of global delicacies this year.

  • One rare manuscript – the century-old handwritten Hasan Riza Hatti Mushaf-i Serif Qur’an (AH 1329–1330 / 1911 CE) – will be on public display.

A standout feature of the event is the public viewing of a rare handwritten copy of the Qur’an, dating back to 1911. This sacred manuscript, usually kept on permanent exhibition at the Mosque, is only displayed on special occasions and is expected to draw strong interest from history and faith enthusiasts.

The day will also offer activities tailored for women, along with a jumping castle to keep children entertained, ensuring the whole family can enjoy the event.

Zoom Out

The Toowoomba Mosque Open Day is part of a broader national movement that encourages interfaith harmony and cultural appreciation. Events like this play a vital role in combating misconceptions and building stronger, more connected communities.

What To Look For Next?

As the Islamic Society of Toowoomba continues its tradition of open dialogue and community engagement, future initiatives are expected to further strengthen multicultural ties in the region. Attendees can look forward to more interactive events, exhibitions, and partnerships that champion inclusion and understanding.

Despite ongoing roadworks in the area, the Toowoomba Regional Council has confirmed that vehicular access to the Mosque will remain open for the full duration of the event.

The Garden City Mosque welcomes everyone. This Saturday is not just an open day – it’s an invitation to connect, learn, and celebrate the richness of Toowoomba’s diverse community.
