What’s happening?
The Salvation Army’s Drive for Life program is calling on Toowoomba locals to volunteer as driver mentors to support disadvantaged young learners aged 16 to 25. The initiative is currently seeking more volunteers to help meet growing demand, with the program based out of the Salvos Corps in Toowoomba.
Why it Matters?
For many young people facing disadvantage, not having a licence can be a major roadblock to gaining employment, independence, and confidence. Drive for Life helps bridge that gap by offering professional lessons and volunteer-supported practice hours in a safe, structured environment.
“Many of our young learners don’t have access to a car or a stable adult to supervise them,” says the program coordinator. “Without support, getting their licence becomes nearly impossible. That’s where our volunteer mentors come in.”
Local Impact
Led by a passionate local coordinator with experience in youth and disability services, the Toowoomba arm of Drive for Life is already making a meaningful impact. With two vehicles and a partnership with a local driving school, the program provides everything learners need — from insurance to cars. However, to reach more young people, it urgently needs more volunteers.
“We’re actively seeking wonderful driver mentors in Toowoomba,” says the team. “Many of our mentors are retirees or active retirees, but we’ve also been supported by people who are still working or even still at school.”

Zoom In
Volunteers don’t need to be professional drivers — just patient, calm, and willing to give a few hours a week. Mentors receive training, insurance, and support from a dedicated coordinator for a smooth, rewarding experience.
Zoom Out
Drive for Life is a national Salvos program supporting youth facing hardship, unstable housing, or family breakdowns. Its presence in Toowoomba is vital for helping young people access the same opportunities as their peers elsewhere.
