What’s Happening?
Northcott’s Skills for Life program is transforming the life of 16-year-old Xavier, a Toowoomba teen living with autism and selective mutism. Xavier is gaining confidence and independence by participating in the program’s weekly group sessions designed for teenagers with disability.
Why it Matters
For young people with communication challenges, especially those who are non-verbal, building life skills and forming social connections can be difficult. Northcott’s program offers a supportive space where participants like Xavier can grow emotionally, socially, and practically.
“Even though he’s non-verbal, he’s found his own way of connecting with others,” said Xavier’s mum, Shanna.
“The Skills for Life program is about more than just learning – it’s about empowering young people with disability to discover their strengths,” said Rowan Lennox, Acting Chief Operating Officer of Northcott.
Local Impact
In Toowoomba, the program has helped Xavier become more involved at home—planning meals, writing shopping lists, and cooking. He now looks forward to each session and has started to dream big, with hopes of working in special effects inspired by his love of horror films.
