What’s happening?

Toowoomba local Harley Brady’s part-time gardening job at Drayton Villas Retirement Village has blossomed into something more meaningful — extra time spent with his grandfather, Brian Brady, who lives in the village.

Why it matters

What began as a simple opportunity to tend gardens has become a heartwarming story of family connection and community spirit. Harley’s role not only helps maintain the village’s beautiful grounds but also strengthens the intergenerational bonds that make Drayton Villas feel like home.

Local Impact

Harley’s work doesn’t just keep the gardens green — it fosters connection. Residents appreciate his care, with Harley noting how “what’s simple for us can be a big thing for them.” His presence brings pride to Brian, who enjoys seeing his grandson contribute to the place he calls home.

By the Numbers

  • Harley joined the Drayton Villas team in July 2024 after his grandfather told him about the job.

  • One strong bond has grown between Harley and his grandfather through their shared time and stories.

  • Dozens of residents now enjoy the thriving gardens Harley helps maintain each day.

Zoom In

Harley’s journey started when Brian told him about the gardener position. “He heard the previous gardener was leaving and asked if I’d be interested,” Harley recalls. “I said yes, and he got in touch with Michael, the Village Manager.”

Brian had already been singing Harley’s praises to the team. “When I started, they pretty much knew everything about me,” Harley laughs. “My grandfather was happy his hard work paid off.”

Harley, who also runs his own gardening business, says the village is one of the best workplaces he’s experienced. “Everyone was lovely from the start — it’s family-oriented and people really look out for each other.”

Zoom Out

Drayton Villas Village Manager Michael McMullen says Harley and Brian’s connection reflects the village’s community spirit. “We’re proud of the strong sense of community here — it’s what makes the village feel like home. Seeing that connection extend across generations is really special,” he says.

For Harley, the role offers more than employment. “Normally you have to put time aside to visit family, but here I can just duck in after work. It’s great.”

What to look for next

As Drayton Villas continues to nurture a community built on care and connection, stories like Harley and Brian’s highlight how meaningful relationships can flourish right alongside the gardens.
