What’s happening?

The Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility at O’Mara Road, Wellcamp, will reopen to the public on Thursday, July 9, 2026, after a temporary closure caused by a fire on site.

Toowoomba Regional Council said normal operations can resume safely after the fire late on Tuesday. Council officers had notified the Queensland Fire Department after noticing the fire at the facility.

The site was closed while Council assessed the affected area and checked whether there was any damage.

Why it matters?

The Wellcamp facility is an important waste disposal site for the Toowoomba Region, and its reopening will allow residents, businesses and regular users to return to normal waste drop-off plans.

Council had closed the facility as a safety measure while officers worked with emergency services and relevant authorities.

TRC CEO Sal Petroccitto said community safety and staff wellbeing remained Council’s highest priorities during the closure.

“Our immediate focus is on assessing the situation and ensuring the site is safe. We appreciate the community’s patience while this important work is undertaken,” Mr Petroccitto said.

Local Impact

The reopening means people who use the Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility can return to the Wellcamp site from Thursday morning.

Residents and businesses no longer need to wait for alternative waste disposal advice, as normal operations are set to resume safely.

The short closure may have delayed some waste drop-offs, but the latest update means public access can restart.

Zoom In

The fire began in the Residual Waste Building, which handles material left after waste sorting and processing.

Council said the fire did not spread beyond that building, but the affected area still needs a full safety check.

That assessment has cleared the way for normal operations to resume safely from Thursday morning.

Zoom Out

The temporary closure showed how quickly a fire at a waste facility can affect access to local services.

Waste sites handle mixed materials, equipment and daily public traffic, so safety checks are important after any fire.

For Toowoomba residents, the reopening means waste disposal can return to normal at the Wellcamp facility.

What To Look For Next?

Council may provide further advice if site conditions change, but normal operations are now able to resume safely.
