What’s happening?

A new campaign launched by Crime Stoppers Queensland is urging Toowoomba locals to take action against illegal firearms—before it’s too late.

Launched on 19 March with Queensland Police, the campaign urges regional Queenslanders to confidentially report illegal firearms.

Why it matters

Illegal firearms are increasingly turning up in incidents of domestic violence, criminal gang activity, and serious assaults. “People in the Toowoomba region need to know that they have the power to help keep their family and community safe,” said Crime Stoppers Queensland CEO David Hansen. “Illegal firearms in the wrong hands can be devastating.”

Local Impact

Crime Stoppers says the people most likely to know who possesses illegal weapons are often those closest—partners, family members or friends. Mr Hansen added, “We are urging them to come forward and report an illegal firearm to Crime Stoppers… staying silent only allows the danger to grow.”

By the Numbers:

  • 🔫 260,000: Estimated illegal firearms circulating in Australia.

  • 📊 3,290: Firearm-related crimes recorded in Queensland last year, including assaults and robberies.

  • 🚫 1,055: Queenslanders had their gun licences revoked in 2024.

Zoom In

Detective Inspector Brad Phelps of the Drug and Serious Crime Group warned, “Even one illegal firearm in the wrong hands can have devastating consequences. If you know of someone storing, selling, or using an illegal firearm, now is the time to act.”

Zoom Out

This initiative supports the National Firearms Amnesty, allowing surrender of unregistered weapons without penalty. Crime Stoppers operates as a not-for-profit charity and offers anonymous reporting that never asks for a name or involvement.

What to Look for Next?

Crime Stoppers will continue working with Toowoomba media and community partners to encourage anonymous reporting. To make a report, call 1800 333 000 or visit crimestoppers.com.au/firearmamnesty/qld.
