The heritage-listed landmark The General Post Office in Margaret Street has been placed on the market in an expression of interest campaign.

Built in 1880, the two-storey sandstone building is considered as one of the region’s landmark historic buildings.

The 2858sqm site, spread across two titles, has been placed on the market through Chris Stewart of LJ Hooker Commercial Toowoomba.

Mr Stewart said the property was on the market for the first time in more than 20 years.

The experienced agent said the historic building was already attracting strong interest including potential buyers from overseas.

He said one potential buyer had spoken to him the United States and they had a history of buying post offices around the world.

The building is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register but a new owner could renovate the interior, subject to regulatory approvals, for a variety of uses such as a hotel or function centre.

The property is currently home to 12 tenants including Murdoch Lawyers, GPO Bar and Cafe, and Engeny. The property has 1656sqm of lettable area across the two levels generating annual net income of $528,159.77.

The Expressions of Interest campaign closes at 4pm on Thursday, October 9.

The building was last sold in 2001 for $915,000.
