What’s Happening?

International Women’s Day (March 8, 2025) is a time of reflection for Jeannie Healy, a diversional therapist at Carinity’s Brownesholme residential aged care community in Highfields. For Jeannie, the day serves as an opportunity to recognise the progress and achievements of women, as well as to reflect on those who have influenced her life.

“I reflect on the women in my life now and in the past: the hardships overcome; inspirational stories that have shaped my life; the men that supported these women to feel value, equality, respect, dignity, safety, and security in all aspects of life,” Jeannie said.

“It’s a time to self-reflect on achievements, goals and those that have worked toward making a change that will benefit all women.”

Why It Matters?

As a diversional therapist, Jeannie works closely with older women in the Darling Downs region and is driven by the strength and resilience of those around her.

“I am motivated at work by the strong women I am surrounded by. I strive to make them proud. I strive to do my best for them. I strive to inspire them even if it is just with a smile of encouragement.”

She is dedicated to creating a welcoming place where both residents and staff feel safe, valued, and respected.

“We ensure that our residents are given the tools and ability to thrive within the community with a sense of empowerment, achievement, worth, and passion.”

“I aim to create a space that provides an inviting and fun place to be with genuine care and kindness that gives everyone a voice and allowing them to express themselves without judgement.”

Local Impact

At Carinity Brownesholme, Jeannie is a strong advocate for the residents, ensuring that they receive the support, resources, and encouragement they need to thrive.

“I strive to make them proud. I strive to do my best for them. I strive to inspire them even if it is just with a smile of encouragement.”

Her approach focuses on active listening, validation, and directing people to the right resources for assistance.

“Taking the time to actively listen and validate, and knowing the right person, place, or information to direct people to for help and assistance.”

By the Numbers

  • 35 residents regularly participate in the Mind Body & Soul wellness activity that Jeannie helped create.
  • The program includes seated exercises led by a visiting physiotherapist, followed by a blessing by Chaplain Tim, and a wellness session.
  • The initiative has seen steady growth over the past year, offering seniors improved physical and emotional well-being.

She also acknowledges the support of her husband and two sons, who encourage her in her advocacy for women.

“My husband and two sons also keep me striving to advocate for women. I am proud to say that my husband and I have raised two young men that value, respect and empower women is one of our greatest achievements.”
