New aviation lease opportunities at Toowoomba City Aerodrome

Source: Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC)

What’s happening?

Toowoomba Regional Council has released a Request for Offer inviting general aviation businesses to lease and develop land at the Toowoomba City Aerodrome.

The process targets operators and aviation support businesses needing hangars, maintenance facilities or operational bases. This includes charter, training and specialist aviation services.

Why it matters?

The aerodrome underpins emergency response, training and charter services across the region.

Council’s focus is on long-term aviation investment, not speculative development. Proposals will be assessed on aviation compatibility, capability, deliverability and broader economic and community benefit.

The region is positioning itself for sustained aviation growth, while protecting operational integrity.

Local Impact

This could mean expanded aviation services, stronger emergency capability and new business activity.

It also signals confidence in the aerodrome’s future as an operational base for specialist services and general aviation operators.

Some sites will require additional planning consideration, and proponents are encouraged to review documentation and complete due diligence.

By the Numbers

• The Request for Offer closes on Tuesday, 24 March 2026, giving aviation businesses a defined window to submit proposals.

• Submissions must be lodged by 2pm AEST, ensuring a clear and firm assessment timeline for Council.

• Proponents must reference VP497137 on VendorPanel to access and respond to the official tender documentation.

Zoom In

Council will assess submissions at the concept level before progressing to detailed planning.

The structure is designed to attract aviation operators who need direct access to aircraft movement areas and active aerodrome operations.

This ensures new developments align with operational requirements and long-term strategy.

Economic Development portfolio spokesperson Cr Edwina Farquhar said the aerodrome already plays a key role across the region.

“The aerodrome supports critical services such as emergency operations, aviation training and charter services, while also underpinning local jobs and business activity,” Cr Farquhar said.

“This process is about enabling the next stage of growth, supporting existing operators to expand and attracting new aviation businesses to establish in Toowoomba.”

Council manages the aerodrome as a certified general aviation facility, with steady demand from operators seeking secure land close to aircraft movement areas.

“We’re looking for aviation-related uses that genuinely need to operate from an active aerodrome environment, whether that’s aircraft hangarage, maintenance, training or specialist services,” Cr Farquhar said.

“The goal is to expand the aerodrome’s capability, resilience and contribution to the regional economy over the long term.”

Zoom Out

Across regional Queensland, aerodromes are becoming more than landing strips. They support emergency services, pilot training and specialist aviation work.

Strengthening the Toowoomba City Aerodrome reinforces the region’s position as an aviation hub in the Darling Downs.

What to Look For Next?

The RFO closes on 24 March 2026.

Successful proposals and future lease agreements will shape the aerodrome’s next stage of development and long-term economic role.
