What’s happening?

The Albanese Government, Queensland Government, and Council of Mayors SEQ announced over $32 million in new infrastructure funding under the final round of the $285.8 million SEQ Liveability Fund. This funding will enhance recreational and sporting facilities across South East Queensland, with a significant focus on Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast.

Toowoomba will benefit from two major projects:

  • $7.5 million for the Escarpment Mountain Bike Trails Project in Jubilee Park.
  • $4.5 million for an upgrade to Southern Cross Oval Amenities.

Why it matters?

This funding supports Toowoomba’s ambition to become a premier outdoor recreation and sporting hub, particularly in mountain biking. The new trails in Jubilee Park will strengthen Toowoomba’s reputation ahead of Brisbane 2032, while the upgraded amenities at Southern Cross Oval will improve sporting infrastructure for local teams and events.

Federal Minister for Cities Jenny McAllister highlighted the long-term vision for SEQ:

“From aquatic centres and bike trails to new coastal walks and sports centres, we are funding projects that will make a real difference to the quality of people’s lives.”

Acting Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Ros Bates reinforced the Queensland Government’s commitment to supporting local communities:

“Generational infrastructure is key to creating a thriving future that protects the lifestyle of those living in South East Queensland, and these projects prioritise local needs while promoting sustainable growth.”

Local Impact

Toowoomba’s local government welcomed the funding, with Mayor Geoff McDonald stating:

“$13.48 million has now been committed through the SEQ City Deal Liveability Fund for a number of priority Council projects.”

He also emphasised the significance of the escarpment mountain bike trails “This includes more than $5.48 million towards the escarpment mountain bike trails, which will help Toowoomba establish itself as a nationally significant mountain biking destination ahead of Brisbane 2032. This means more recreation opportunities for resident riders and a boost for the visitor economy.”

The Southern Cross Oval Amenities Upgrade will replace the existing outdated facilities with a state-of-the-art sports building, ensuring athletes and local teams have access to modern and inclusive infrastructure.

  • $7.5 million for 35 km of new world-class mountain bike trails in Jubilee Park.
  • $4.5 million to upgrade Southern Cross Oval’s amenities to a state-of-the-art facility.
