What’s happening?

Performers with disabilities from Multicap’s Centre of Creative Arts(COCA) will take the stage at BEMAC in Brisbane on Saturday, 20 December for inSTAR.

The musical is an artist-led production created by performers from across Queensland. It explores corruption and fakery in the media and entertainment industry and redefines what it takes to be a star.

Why it matters

COCA Program Lead Alicia Jones said the production was shaped to support inclusion, creativity and community.

She said it also highlights the skills of artists with disabilities.

“Artists with a disability are under-represented and under-employed in the creative sector,” Ms Jones said.

Local Impact

The event also highlights the role of Multicap’s Centre of Creative Arts. The COCA program gives people with disability a chance to grow their creative abilities and professional potential.

By the numbers

• More than 50 performers collaborated to build this original production, showing strong state-wide involvement.
• The foyer exhibition will feature 2025 retrospective works by over 30 COCA visual artists.
• Tickets cost $10 each on Eventbrite, with limited seats offered to the public.

Zoom In

Ms Jones said the production comes at an important time.

“As Brisbane prepares for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we anticipate a surge in demand for creative talent to bring events to life,” she said.

She said many barriers remain. “With so few accessible theatres and opportunities for artists with disability in Brisbane to hone their craft, we knew it was vital to create a space where their talent could truly develop and shine,”

Zoom Out

The inSTAR performance is part of a broader creative experience. It will include pre-show guest musicians and a visual art exhibition in the foyer.

“From the pre-show guest musicians, engaging visual art exhibition, through to the stage spectacular, inSTAR is a feast for the senses and the soul,” Ms Jones said.

What to look for next

The production signals growing interest in COCA’s work and future creative projects, supported by the strong efforts of performers across Queensland.
