What’s happening?
Pilots in Toowoomba and Roma will soon have the chance to sharpen their in-flight communication skills, with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) bringing its Loud and clear – Effective communication seminar series to both cities.
The Toowoomba session will take place on Sunday, 15 June, from 4pm to 6pm at Oaks Toowoomba Hotel, while Roma pilots can attend on Monday, 16 June, from 6pm to 8pm at the Roma Aero Club.
Part of CASA’s nationwide free pilot safety seminar program, these sessions help pilots refresh skills, improve knowledge, and enhance flight safety.
Why it matters?
Effective communication is crucial for maintaining situational awareness, particularly at non-controlled aerodromes where pilots must coordinate with each other. CASA’s Loud and clear seminars address common pitfalls and provide practical strategies to prevent misunderstandings in the air.
As CASA Aviation Safety Advisor Tim Penney explains:
“Communication is vital for building situational awareness, which is an essential tool for maintaining safety margins, especially at non-controlled aerodromes.”
Penney emphasises that the seminars suit all pilots, from novices to veterans.
“These seminars offer pilots of all experience levels the chance to refresh their knowledge, avoid common errors, and apply lessons learned from case studies and discussions to their own flying.”
“Pilots will also pick up practical tips to help manage risk and understand the critical role communication plays in the airborne environment.”
“We encourage pilots of all levels to attend these free seminars, as they also provide a great opportunity to engage with CASA, discuss local issues, and ask questions.”
Local Impact
The Toowoomba and Roma seminars will directly benefit the region’s aviation community by improving communication practices in non-controlled airspace—a critical safety issue in both locations.
Pilots attending will also contribute to wider community safety, as stronger communication reduces the risk of mid-air incidents and improves coordination during emergency responses.
By the Numbers
-
Over 100 free pilot safety seminars are hosted annually by CASA across Australia.
-
Thousands of pilots have participated in CASA’s nationwide safety seminars since their inception.
-
The seminars address communication in over 300 non-controlled aerodromes operating in Australia, including Toowoomba and Roma.
Zoom In
The Loud and clear – Effective communication seminar will cover:
-
The basics of human communication and how it affects aviation safety
-
Aviation communication rules and procedures pilots must follow
-
Real-life examples of miscommunication and how to avoid them
-
Techniques to improve communication clarity and efficiency
-
Use of an AFRU (Aerodrome Frequency Response Unit) for improved coordination
-
Case studies showcasing lessons learned from real-world incidents
The seminars are highly interactive, offering pilots the opportunity to learn from CASA experts and fellow aviators.
Zoom Out
Nationwide, CASA’s commitment to aviation safety continues through its free seminar program. These events address evolving challenges in the aviation sector and foster a culture of continuous learning.
In regional Queensland, where many pilots regularly operate from non-controlled aerodromes, mastering clear communication is essential to safe operations.
