Public housing boost for Toowoomba

Toowoomba is finally getting more community housing with another 87 new homes on the way for the city’s battlers.

The State Government is helping to fund the construction of the new homes in the Darling Downs in partnership with community housing providers.

St Vincent de Paul Society has now started building 27 new social homes in Newtown and they are due for completion in late 2026.

Brisbane Housing Company is also set to start construction of 75-home project in Station Street this month with completion earmarked for mid-2027. The project combines 50 social and community homes with 25 “affordable and market” homes.

In Clifton, south of Toowoomba, another 10 new social homes are now underway in a partnership with Clifton Co-op Hospital, a new community housing provider that is developing its first social housing project. The debut project is scheduled for completion by mid-2026.

The news comes after the Salvation Army this week opened its 23-unit, $17m social housing project in Toowoomba’s CBD.

The Salvation Army Housing’s 19 one-bedroom and four two-bedroom homes have all been built with accessible features such as step-free entrances and showers and can have grabrails in the bathrooms. The complex was completed in June and is already fully tenanted.

Minister for Housing Sam O’Connor said the State Government had started work on delivering an additional 499 social and community homes in the Darling Downs.

“These partnerships are part of our broader commitment to increasing access to social and community housing and reducing homelessness in this region,” Mr O’Connor said.

“We’ve committed a record $5.6 billion statewide over the next four years alone to support our commitment to deliver 53,500 social and community homes.”

Salvation Army spokesman said they are deeply grateful to the Queensland Government for enabling the development of much-needed social housing on their property in Toowoomba

“This partnership is creating a space where lives can be rebuilt and communities strengthened,” he said.

“We also extend our sincere thanks to our construction partners, led by McNab Constructions—a long-time supporter of the Salvos whose values align closely with our mission.

“Salvos Housing will oversee tenant selection and community development, ensuring residents feel safe, supported, and connected.”
