Runners are lining up in droves for the fourth annual Murphys Creek Challenge this Sunday and the organisers are hoping to set a record for the number of competitors.

The trail runs, set over three distances are run along the trails through the Murphys Creek Recreation Reserve.

Toowoomba Road Runners president Wendy Dighton said they were hoping more than 200 people would take part in the 7km, 14km and 21km runs.

Toowoomba Road Runners and the Murphy Creek Progress Association teamed up after the end of the COVID-19 lockdown to run the inaugural event and it has grown year after year.

Ms Dighton said runners could simply register on the day but pre-registrations showed they were looking at a record year.

“Last year we had 160 people take but this year we are hoping we will attract more than 200 runners,’’ she said.

Ms Dighton said the Road Runners Club and the Progress Association were hopeful the event would continue to grow and evolve into a flagship event for running in the region.

“The event has a terrific atmosphere. The tracks for the different distance all loop past together so it is a real social affair,’’ she said.

“It doesn’t matter which course you are competing on, there is nearly always somebody around to cheer you on.”

Runners for all distances are provided with a time limit to complete the event but Ms Dighton said the time limits were very generous to cater for most runners.

The half marathon starts at 6:45am, followed by the 14km event at 7:45am and 7km event at 8:00am. A race briefing for all participants will be conducted 10 minutes before each event start.
