What’s Happening?

The Plaza branch in Toowoomba reopens as People First Bank today Thursday, 13 August 2026, following a branding refurbishment. Located beneath the bank’s current head office, it is the first Heritage Bank branch in Queensland to complete the change.

The reopening forms part of the move towards one national identity across the bank’s services and branch network.

Why It Matters?

Earlier this year, People First Bank introduced new products, digital banking, a website and customer services under its national name. Updating the Plaza branch now connects those services with the bank’s long-standing physical presence in Toowoomba.

Chief Customer Officer Maria-Ann Camilleri said the reopening carried particular meaning because of the bank’s local roots. “We were founded in Toowoomba more than 150 years ago, so it’s fitting the first Heritage branch to become People First Bank is here,” Ms Camilleri said. “It reflects our long-term commitment to Toowoomba through local jobs, community investment and our new head office.”

Local Impact

The rebrand carries local weight because People First Bank remains a major employer and community investor across the region. It also operates more branches than any other bank across Toowoomba and the Darling Downs.

Together, these commitments keep local jobs, customer services and community funding tied to the bank’s national change.

By The Numbers

  • Around 450 people work for the bank locally, giving People First Bank the largest banking workforce in the region.
  • About $4 million is invested in local communities each year, maintaining the bank’s financial support across the region.
  • The transition will continue over the coming 12 months, with all Heritage branches expected to change by July 2027.

Zoom In

The refurbished branch remains at 400 Ruthven Street, directly below the bank’s existing head office. The location continues to house both the Plaza branch and the bank’s local head office operations.

The branch now displays People First Bank branding, matching the name already used across the bank’s newer products and services.

Zoom Out

The Plaza branch is among the first four Heritage locations nationally to receive People First Bank branding. Parramatta, Castle Hill and Brisbane’s Queen Street branch have also been updated as part of the initial group.

This places Toowoomba among the first Australian communities to receive a fully rebranded Heritage branch.

What To Look For Next?

Planning is also progressing for a new Toowoomba head office at 502 Ruthven Street. People First Bank has signed an Agreement to Lease with Toowoomba-based developer FKG Group, which will construct the building.

The bank will be the principal tenant, occupying office and branch space while holding the building’s naming rights. Toowoomba Regional Council is expected to consider the development application in coming months, with completion anticipated in 2029.
