Toowoomba–Cecil Plains road upgrades underway

Toowoomba–Cecil Plains Road pre-construction

What’s Happening?

Construction has officially commenced on the Toowoomba–Cecil Plains Road safety upgrade project, following extensive community consultation in 2024. Led by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), the project will deliver several targeted safety improvements aimed at reducing crash risks and improving efficiency on this key agricultural corridor.

Why It Matters

The Toowoomba–Cecil Plains Road is a vital transport link for the Darling Downs Region, especially for agricultural freight and regional travel. Enhancing safety features on this route will not only protect road users but also support the local economy by improving transport reliability and flow.

TMR’s Southern Queensland Regional Director, Bill Lansbury, highlighted the collaborative approach: “No one knows more about what’s needed on this key route than the locals who use it,” he said.

“This project will not only increase the transport efficiency and reliability of the road but help to save lives and reduce the risk of serious crashes.”

Local Impact

Community feedback directly shaped the project. Local residents and property owners called for more turning, overtaking, and merging lanes, along with general maintenance and widening. These insights have been incorporated into the upgrade plan, ensuring the project reflects on-the-ground needs.

By the Numbers:

  • Queensland Government invested $27.03 million under the High Risk Roads initiative, part of the Targeted Road Safety Project

  • Estimated project completion will be on mid to late 2026

  • Safety upgrades to include:

    • Dedicated turning lanes

    • Pavement widening

    • Intersection upgrades

    • New signage

    • Audio tactile line marking

Zoom In

The safety treatments target high-risk crash zones along the route. TMR’s efforts focus on reducing serious and fatal injury crashes, with improvements designed to manage turning movements, minimise head-on collision risk, and enhance driver awareness through clear line markings and signage.

Zoom Out

This upgrade is part of the Queensland Government’s broader investment into regional road safety under the Targeted Road Safety Project. By focusing on high-risk roads, the initiative aims to address critical safety challenges and support long-term economic growth across the state.

What To Look For Next?

Residents can expect to see construction activities intensify over the coming months. The project is scheduled for completion by mid-to-late 2026, with ongoing updates to be provided by TMR. Motorists are advised to stay informed about potential disruptions and travel changes as work progresses.
