Toowoomba Regional Council Ensures Uninterrupted Essential Services During Christmas and New Year Break

Although Council operations will officially close from 5 pm on Friday, December 22, 2023, until Tuesday, January 2, 2024, Mayor Geoff McDonald assures the public that emergency requests will be promptly addressed.

Mayor McDonald emphasised the commitment to providing essential services, stating, “If anyone requires assistance with a Council-provided essential service during the Christmas-New Year break, rest assured that someone will be available to answer your query or respond to an emergency.”

Toowoomba Council Christmas Break

In the spirit of the season, Council staff will take a break to celebrate and spend time with family and friends, returning to duty on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

Exclusions from the Christmas shutdown

Exemptions to the Christmas closures include specific functional areas where employees will be on duty for priority projects:

  • water supply testing and monitoring
  • CBD parking supervision
  • ongoing maintenance
  • addressing essential and emergencies

Additionally, public facilities such as aquatic centres, fitness facilities, libraries, and Visitor Information Centres will remain open to deliver services to the public.

For Council-related emergencies during the holiday period, residents are encouraged to call 131 872.

This emergency line covers issues such as burst water mains, water leaks, malfunctioning traffic signals, dog attacks, environmental incidents, emergency service callouts, road obstructions from fallen trees, hazardous potholes, sewer blockages/overflows, and road safety hazards caused by dead animals.

Certain services will continue uninterrupted during this time, including the Council’s kerbside waste collection, which will operate as usual over the Christmas break.

All waste facilities, however, will be closed on Christmas Day, with normal operating hours resuming on Boxing Day. Various Council facilities will observe individual opening times during the Christmas closure.

Residents seeking more information about Toowoomba Regional Council service operations during the Christmas closure can contact the Council on 131 872 or visit www.tr.qld.gov.au/christmashours.
