What’s happening?
Primary schools are gearing up to join children across Australia for National Walk Safely to School Day on Friday, 16 May 2025. Celebrating its 26th year, this annual event encourages students to walk to, from, and during school.
Why it matters
The Pedestrian Council of Australia leads the initiative, aiming to improve children’s health, road safety awareness, and environmental responsibility. Walking boosts cognitive and academic performance, too.
“Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day,” said CEO Harold Scruby. “We should encourage them to take a walk before school, during and at end of their day.”
Local Impact
Toowoomba schools are encouraged to host a Healthy Breakfast and remind parents to walk with younger kids. “Until they are 10, children must always hold the hand of an adult when crossing the road,” Scruby added.
