Bonza’s Successful First Year at Wellcamp Airport
More than 50,000 people have flown to and from Toowoomba on budget airline Bonza in its first year of flights from Wellcamp Airport.
The independent airline made its debut flight at Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport in April last year and currently flies to Townsville and Melbourne.
The milestone comes as the Toowoomba Regional Council is reviewing the future of the 100-year-old Toowoomba City Aerodrome.
It also comes as Bonza is cutting back on flights to some destinations around Australia and has reportedly called in advisors to check the finances.
Bonza chief executive officer Tim Jordan said the airline was committed to its mission to connect more Aussies to their backyard than ever before.
Impact on Local Community and Economy
“We’re grateful for the support of locals in the Darling Downs region since we started flying to and from the Garden City connecting them to North Queensland and the Victorian capital as we continue to stimulate new tourism opportunities in each direction‚” Mr Jordan said.
“Many of those more than 50,000 customers are first-time or infrequent flyers, and we’re humbled to help them on their Bonza journey to spend more time with family and friends or to explore more of our wonderful big backyard with low-cost air travel.”
Welcoming Milestone for Wellcamp Airport
Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport General Manager Kellie Banditt also welcomed the milestone.
“Bonza has made a significant impact for locals, allowing accessibility and convenience for interstate and intra-state travel‚” she said.
“Bonza has been a key contributor to Wellcamp Airport reaching record passengers in 2023/24 as well as the positive economic impact on the city, highlighting the opportunities for tourism and business growth.
“The support Bonza has received from residents has been outstanding. Hopefully‚ this will open up other opportunities for more destinations outside of Wellcamp Airport.”
