What’s Happening?
Toowoomba has made history after 1,564 people gathered at Queens Park dressed as Toowoomba Violets for Floral Friday.
The gathering surpassed the previous world record and marked the opening of the 2026 Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers. Schoolchildren, families, locals, visitors and community groups joined the event.
Why It Matters
The record attempt celebrated the Toowoomba Violet, which has been part of the city’s identity for almost a century.
Toowoomba Regional Council Tourism portfolio spokesperson Cr James O’Shea said the event celebrated the city’s gardens, people and community spirit.
“The Toowoomba Violet has such a special place in our city’s history, so it’s fitting that we’ve celebrated it by bringing our community together and making a little history of our own. To start the 2026 Carnival by breaking a world record is a pretty spectacular way to celebrate what makes Toowoomba special – our gardens, our people and our community spirit.”
Local Impact
The event brought together schoolchildren and families alongside locals, visitors, community groups and Toowoomba Regional Council representatives.
Toowoomba East State School Health Teacher and Sustainability Programs Coordinator Amy McGaw said the event also connected students with their local history.
“For our students, this is about so much more than trying to break a record. It’s about being part of their community, learning about our history and creating a memory they’ll carry with them.”

- 938 people dressed as sunflowers in Malta to set the previous world record.
- 1932 was the year the Toowoomba Violet was formally declared the city’s floral emblem.
- More than 80 events and experiences feature in the 2026 Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.

Zoom In
The Sweet Violet, Viola odorata, became known as the Toowoomba Violet after World War I. Local mothers and families sold bunches of the flowers to raise funds for the Mothers’ Memorial, honouring their fallen sons.
The flower later became Toowoomba’s official floral emblem.

The world record marked the start of the 2026 Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, which runs from 18 September to 5 October.
The Carnival brings a program of events and experiences across the Garden City, including the Grand Central Floral Parade, FEASTival and Paw Parade.
What To Look For Next?
The Grand Central Floral Parade takes place on 19 September, followed by FEASTival on 26 and 27 September. Paw Parade follows on 4 October, before the Carnival concludes on 5 October.
