What’s happening?

The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has launched its annual Christmas Blood Blitz, calling for 250 blood and plasma donors from Toowoomba between December 18 and January 2.

The campaign aims to ensure sufficient blood supplies for patients during the busy holiday period.

Why it Matters?

Blood and plasma donations are essential for patients with immune conditions, cancer, trauma injuries, and women in childbirth.

The festive season often sees a decline in donations as routines are disrupted, making it crucial to ensure a steady supply of lifesaving blood products.

Belinda Smetioukh, Lifeblood spokesperson, said: “It is vital to have a constant stream of donors to ensure patient needs are met.”

Local Impact

Toowoomba residents are being called on to support their community by booking a donation at one of Lifeblood’s donor centres.

Lifeblood centres will remain open throughout the holidays, including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, offering flexible opportunities to give back. “The most meaningful item you can put on your Christmas ‘to do’ list today is to lock in a blood or plasma donation and keep it,” Belinda added.

By the Numbers

  • 250 blood and plasma donors are urgently needed from Toowoomba between December 18 and January 2.
  • Queensland as a whole requires over 3,500 donors during the same period.
  • Donations save lives by supporting cancer treatments, trauma care, and patients with immune conditions.

To thank donors, Lifeblood is offering a limited-edition bandage created by artist and plasma recipient Kat Macleod.

This vibrant bandage celebrates the generosity of Australian donors and will be available to Toowoomba donors until Sunday, January 5, 2025.

“Make the season your reason. A blood donation is a selfless gift that can not only save lives but improve the quality of lives and give people more precious moments with their loved ones,” said Belinda.
