What’s Happening?
Toowoomba’s own Mariam Nabizada has been named Queensland’s winner in the 2025 Country to Canberra Leadership Competition. Her entry on how technology is reshaping gender equality in rural communities secured her a coveted spot on the organisation’s annual Power Trip to Canberra next month.
Why It Matters
Mariam’s selection highlights the strength of rural voices in national conversations about equality, innovation, and leadership. The program empowers young rural women and non-binary youth to build confidence, gain leadership skills, and connect with changemakers.

Local Impact
Mariam’s achievement brings pride to Toowoomba and shines a light on how young leaders from regional Queensland can influence national policy and advocacy. Her participation is expected to inspire other local students to pursue leadership opportunities and amplify youth perspectives on social issues.
By the Numbers
• Six winners were chosen from each state and territory for their inspiring essays on rural equality and innovation.
• The Power Trip will run for four days and include workshops, mentoring sessions, and meetings with political leaders.
• Country to Canberra launched its leadership competition in 2014 and has since empowered thousands of young rural voices.

“Being selected to represent Queensland in the Country to Canberra Leadership Competition means so much to me,” said Mariam. “This is a chance for me to show on a national platform that where you come from doesn’t limit how far you can go.”
Country to Canberra CEO Courtney Bailey said, “We are thrilled to welcome Mariam on our award-winning Power Trip and to have her voice heard by leaders and changemakers. We’re looking forward to helping her translate her strengths into practical, sustainable actions for the benefit of her community, Queensland, and Australia.”
Zoom Out
Since 2014, the Country to Canberra initiative has built a nationwide network of empowered young leaders. Past winners have gone on to receive national awards, serve on Boards, and even run for public office—demonstrating the long-term impact of the program.
What to Look for Next
Mariam will join the other winners: Caitlin Evans (NSW), Isla McNaughton (VIC), Jessica John (WA), Madison Schell (SA), Deni Seaniger (NT), and Tyla Burk (TAS) in Canberra next month. Their journey will include leadership workshops, mentorship, and opportunities to engage directly with policymakers.
